  • Successful securitisations in 2024 and 2025 have attracted local and global investors from banks, insurance companies, superannuation funds and credit funds
  • Reverse mortgage-backed securities provide an opportunity for Australia to sustainably supply housing and funding for an ageing population

4 September 2026:

Leading provider of home equity retirement funding, Household Capital, has won the Finder Innovation Award 2026 for creating a new asset class: Australian Reverse Mortgage Backed Securities.

In creating the new asset class, Household Capital has unlocked institutional capital to give retirees funding certainty by uniquely securitising Australian variable-rate reverse mortgages.

“We are delighted to be recognized by the Finder Awards for our innovation in building a new asset class to attract global capital to meet the needs of Australia’s aging population” Household Capital CEO and Founder, Dr Josh Funder, said.

Household Capital was established in 2016 and began originating loans in 2019. It has experienced rapid growth, with the value of its loans doubling since 2023 to over $1 billion.

“Successful mortgage portfolio securitisations in 2024 and 2025 have attracted local and global investors from banks, insurance companies, superannuation funds and credit funds” Dr Funder said.

Household Capital has developed a sophisticated funding program, comprising a warehouse supported by lenders Citi, PEP and Revolution, and a series of rated mortgage portfolio securitisations. Its most recent term securitisation achieved AAA rating for senior notes, and was four times oversubscribed.

“Household Capital mortgage portfolio securities have been rated 100% AAA by S&P, meaning they are Australia’s lowest risk home loans. Our mortgage product reduces risk for our customers as well as our wholesale investors – a virtuous circle which means we can scale funding to meet this national need” Dr Funder said.

A nationwide survey by Deloitte revealed Australian reverse mortgages totaled around $5.5 billion as at 30 June 2025, representing more than 40,000 households with a reverse mortgage product.

Australians aged 60 and over hold more than $3 trillion in residential property wealth. This means the median retiree has around $800,000 in wealth saved in their home equity, three to four times as their superannuation.

Household Capital is supporting the growing demand for equity release to help fund additional income, refinance home loans, fund medical expenses, renovations, travel, or everyday retirement living for those whose wealth is locked up in the family home.
