Meet Paul & Marilyn

Marilyn, 72, and Paul, 74, worked hard to build the house of their dreams on the South Coast of NSW. It was a welcoming place where friends and family could gather and spend time together, and both Marylin and Paul knew it was where they wanted to retire.

In 2019, when a major bushfire devastated the South Coast of NSW, the house sustained major damage. They knew, as they drove away from the fires with their grandchildren and Paul’s 101-year-old father-in-law, that they would return to a ravaged place – and that’s exactly what happened.“

"There was fire on both sides,” Marilyn says.

We tried three times to get back and when I arrived, the house was still smouldering. Everything in the garden was just black. Through the fires, we had to rebuild. And in the rebuild, our budgets did get blown," Paul explains.

To get the financial help they needed, the couple turned to a large bank, one they had been with for nearly 50 years. However, the response they received wasn’t at all helpful: according to the bank, they had no choice but to sell.

Desperate for an alternate solution, the couple spoke to their daughter, and she referred them to her Financial Adviser, who in turn, recommended Household Capital. They can now enjoy their retirement in comfort.
